This moment, just before spring…
First cup of tea in the garden, just waiting….
Autumn all the way into spring…

Objective:
Create a joyful, personal, or symbolic piece that combines at least three techniques from this 30-day journey. Celebrate your progress with a painting that doesn’t just use the tools – you own them.

Materials:

  • Your go-to watercolor paper
  • Any mix of pigments – choose colors that feel good to use
  • A variety of brushes
  • Pencil, maybe ink, maybe masking fluid, maybe even some shimmer – whatever fits
  • Courage. (Optional, but encouraged.)

Subject Prompt (Choose What Speaks to You):

  • Your hands holding something meaningful (paintbrush, flower, cup)
  • Your bike leaning on a fence or parked under a tree
  • Your deck at golden hour, mid-rain, or with a cup of tea
  • Or something else joyful or symbolic: your favorite shoes, your pet’s nose, a tree that always makes you stop and stare

Suggested Process:

  1. Sketch and Plan:
Lightly draw the scene or object. As you plan, decide which techniques you want to use:
    • Wet-on-wet for sky or soft background
    • Masking for light spots or shine
    • Glazing/layering for depth or shadows
    • Dry-on-dry for detail, fur, or lines
    • Color temperature play for distance or mood
    • Flat shapes to add design flair
    • Scratching or shimmer for texture or pop
  2. Start Loosely, Build Thoughtfully:
Let your first washes be expressive – don’t overthink. Let joy lead your hand.
As you add layers and refine, shift into control-mode: slow down, bring in edge control, subtle glazing, precise brushwork.
  3. Celebrate the Mix:
Layer your techniques intentionally. Let soft petals meet dry scratches. Let masked glints play against translucent glazes. Let bold shapes stand beside whispery washes.
  4. Finish With a Personal Mark:
Add a tiny detail only you would know to include. A date, an object, a signature flourish. It’s yours.

Focus:

  • Combine at least three techniques – deliberately.
  • Embrace imperfection. Let this piece be about freedom, not pressure.
  • If it feels a little chaotic? That’s 30 days of growth on the page.

Bonus Prompt (for after):
Write on the back:

“I painted this after 30 days of showing up. This is where I am. This is what I know now.”
