And a new beginning. Finally the first green leaves on the hornbeam hedge! And the tomatoes and squash did just fine overnight in the raised bed. Very pleased!
Though I was going for a bike ride… That did not happen. Just… didn’t.

Instead, I went for a walk to Hornbach for more compost mesh, a parsley plant, and uh, three primulas (Sunset Shades) because they were so pretty. Somehow, a packet of cornflower seeds (low blue variety) ended up in the basket too… and a shutoff valve for the garden hose… Not exactly a budget-friendly stroll 🙂

Then I got to work on the raised bed that was the “herb garden” last year. Parsley and chives are staying put, and I sowed some dill… Then I planted out the little “Little Gem” seedlings, eight covered with plastic cloches, and eight left bare. Curious to see how that turns out. Haven’t seen a single slug yet, but if there’s ever a time they’ll appear, it’ll be now that I’ve planted lettuce…
In front of the lettuce I sowed calendula (the seeds totally look like tiny dinosaur fossils, right?), then realized that wasn’t the brightest idea. Calendula grow slightly taller… Hoping the lettuce grows fast and the flowers slow so they don’t compete. In front of those I planted the last of the “Tip Top” nasturtiums.
Raised bed: full!
All that’s left now are the Queen Anne’s Pocket Melons (waiting on the latest batch of bokashi to prep the soil) and a few varieties of beans to sow. Oh, and the Malabar spinach has to go out too! But it won’t survive even a hint of frost, so I’m holding off a bit longer.
Out on the deck, I repotted quite a few plants into bigger containers. The Espelette and Jamaican Bells have now moved into their final pots. Bit by bit, the garden is taking shape.

And last but not least, the primulas in the corner behind the raised beds. Sadly out of view from the deck, but every garden needs a surprise or two 🙂
Managed to squeeze in a little coffee and ice cream on the deck, too… and then, time was up. Five days off just vanish, don’t they?
