May: Frost, hail, and a side of winter…

Winter bites with its teeth or lashes with its tail.

Montenegrin Proverb

The frost took out one of the squash plants and five out of six tomatoes. In the morning, when everything was still crisp and glistening, it all looked fine—but by the afternoon, the damage was clear. Thankfully, I had backups that survived on the deck and indoors. And luckily, I had covered quite a bit with cloches, fleece, and blankets…

Decided to give the more sensitive survivors some extra care and moved anything remotely fragile inside from the deck…
So now I’m living in a greenhouse again 🙂 And wouldn’t you know it – just after the move, down came the hail.
The next morning, there was still ice tucked into the folds of the blankets.

And then… the first rhubarb harvest of the season turned into a gloriously sticky crumble!
